The Gambia cuts ties with British Commonwealth

 (express.co.uk) - GAMBIAN despot Yahya Jammeh provoked “regret” from British officials yesterday after he took his country out of the Commonwealth.

It was not clear what triggered the decision. But President Jammeh – who likes to be called His Excellency Sheikh Professor Doctor President – apparently made it on a whim.

The leader of the tiny West African nation said the 54-member institution headed by the Queen was “neo-colonial”.

He is the first to leave the Commonwealth unilaterally since Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe 10 years ago.

Mr Jammeh has been criticised by Britain for human rights abuses. In August last year, he executed nine death-row inmates by firing squad.

The Royal Commonwealth Society said his announcement was unexpected and appeared to be undemocratic.
