Iceland equal pay law set to end gender pay gap

Until now women in Iceland have earned an average 19% less than their male colleagues. But those days are over. A new law makes equal pay for equal work a must in the country — irrespective of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or nationality.

The new law, which went into effect New Year's Day, covers about 150,000 workers in the country. The measure applies to 1,200 companies in Iceland that have at least 25 workers, and the firms will have to publish their wage scales.

There are courses to help the companies implement the new pay scales. Upon completion, the companies get a certificate that have to be renewed every three years.

The measure intends to close the gender pay gap by 2022. Although other countries have made similar moves, for now Iceland is the global pioneer.

"The legislation is basically a mechanism that companies and organizations ... evaluate every job that's being done, and then they get a certification after they confirm the process if they are paying men and women equally," Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind of the Icelandic Women's Rights Association, told Al Jazeera. DallasNews - If state Rep. Jessica Farrar has her way, men in Texas will pay a $100 fine for "unregulated masturbatory emissions" and undergo a digital rectal exam to get a vasectomy, a colonoscopy or a Viagra prescription.

Farrar's proposed legislation, filed last week, calls on the Department of State Health Services to explain the rules in an illustrated booklet titled "A Man's Right to Know."

Sound familiar? The Houston Democrat's bill is a satirical version of a Texas law passed in 2011 that requires women to have a sonogram and hear a detailed description of the fetus before getting an abortion. Those rules are outlined in a booklet produced by the state called "A Woman's Right to Know."

"A lot of people find the bill funny," Farrar told the Houston Chronicle. "What's not funny are the obstacles that Texas women face every day, that were placed there by legislatures making it very difficult for them to access health care."

Farrar's bill penalizes masturbatory emissions outside a vagina or a medical facility, describing them as "an act against an unborn child" that fails to preserve "the sanctity of life."

Fines collected under the measure would be funneled to the Department of Family and Protective Services for the care of children.

The lawmaker proposes that the state keep a registry of private hospitals and organizations that counsel men to stay "fully abstinent," offer physicians to supervise masturbation and store semen for future conception.

Men seeking a vasectomy, a colonoscopy or a Viagra prescription would first undergo a "medically unnecessary" digital rectal exam and magnetic resonance imaging of the rectum, per Farrar's bill. After the exam, men would have to wait at least 24 hours before they could get the procedure or the prescription they wanted.

These provisions of the Democrat's bill echo the 2011 Texas law requiring women to take two trips to a clinic to get an abortion. The bill also calls on the state to include medically accurate and objective information in its booklet for men.

The designer and filmmaker told GQ he believed all men should be sexually penetrated at least once in their lifetime back in 2004 — and more than 10 years later, he stands by those comments even though he claims to have been drunk when he first made them.

“I think it would help them understand women,” he told GQ this week. “It’s such a vulnerable position to be in, and it’s such a passive position to be in. And there’s such an invasion, in a way, that even if it’s consensual, it’s just very personal.

The “Nocturnal Animals” director said there’s more than just a physical connection, making it a challenge to explain to those who have never experienced it.

“I think there’s a psyche that happens because of it that makes you understand and appreciate what women go through their whole life, because it’s not just sexual, it’s a complete setup of the way the world works, that one sex has the ability to literally — and is expected to and is wanted to — but also there’s an invasion,” he said. “And I think that that’s something most men do not understand at all.”

During the original interview, Ford, in addition to being under the influence, also propositioned the heterosexual male writer.

“I was just trying to take the piss out of him,” he explained, adding he “read the article through his fingers when it came out, the whole time wondering, ‘Oh God, what was I thinking?’”

Ford, who is now sober, has been married to his husband Richard Buckley for two years. They’ve been together for about 30 years and share a 4-year-old son together named Jack. (Source)

Oh Canada!: Canada’s national anthem is likely to become ‘gender neutral’

{Washingtonpost} - Canada's lower house of Parliament voted Wednesday (June15) to tweak the words to the national anthem so that it is "gender neutral." The bill will now move to the Senate.

Currently, the English version of "O Canada" contains the words "true patriot love, in all thy sons command" — and the second clause would be replaced with "in all of us command."

Canada's new prime minster, Justin Trudeau, has been hailed as a feminist leader and made his cabinet the first to have equal numbers of men and women. His Liberal Party controls the House of Commons, and the vote to change the anthem was passed resoundingly. Patty Hadju, the Status of Women minister, said of the move: "I think it’s really important as a very strong symbol of our commitment to gender equality in this country."

The bill was introduced by Mauril Bélanger, who has championed the cause for many years. The bill was tabled once before, in 2010, and it was voted down by the previous Conservative-led government. But the move has gained greater urgency since Bélanger received a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The disease is terminal.

There are concerns that the Canadian Senate, which usually does pass bills sent to it by the House of Commons, won't get around to the bill before Bélanger passes away.

"O Canada" was composed in 1880, and its original version was in French. The English version is an adaptation, not translation, of the French, and was written decades later. It didn't become the national anthem until 1980. The French version has gender-neutral language.

Lawmakers in the House of Commons stood and sang the anthem in both national languages after the vote passed Wednesday. It wasn't clear whether the English version they sang had the amended clause. (Full Story)

(Telegraph.com) May 25, 1015 - Male rape survivor John Lennon is adamant that group therapy at a dedicated, male-only support network helped save his life.

Lennon’s attacker was sentenced to four years and three months after he brutally raped him for three and a half hours at his flat in Manchester in August 2010. At he end of his horrific ordeal, Lennon needed plastic surgery to rebuild his battered face – but it was his shattered mind that would bear the bigger scars.

Yet, like many survivors of male rape, he had no idea where to turn for help.

“After my attack I was suicidal, and in desperation called a Rape Crisis helpline, but the woman said, ‘This service is for women only,’ and hung up on me,” says Lennon, 45, from Manchester. “I don’t blame her, but I felt so angry and rejected that they turned men away. Luckily, I used my anger to get help.”

Then Lennon found out about Survivors Manchester – one of only 20 services nationwide that offer help to male rape victims and one of four that offer male-dedicated help – and his slow path to recovery began.

“I started two years of group therapy, which is crucial,” he says. “It makes you feel like you’re not alone, not such damaged goods; like a whole human again.”

Yet in spite of John’s experience that single-sex therapy is essential,Survivors UK (based in London and the UK’s biggest male-only victim support group) has recently had its funding slashed to zero, meaning the only male-dedicated service in London now has to turn desperate men like Lennon away – despite a staggering 120 per cent increase in male rape in the capital in two years.

Police crime figures for 2014 in England & Wales show there were 38,134 incidents of rape or sexual assault of a woman and 3,580 against men.

Yet due to the shame and stigma surrounding perhaps the darkest male taboo of all, Survivors UK believe only 2-3 per cent of men report their rapes (official figures for women are 10-12 per cent reporting) meaning many thousands of men are suffering in silence.

Furthermore, there are an estimated 1.5 million adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse in the UK – abuse against boys accounts for around 70 per cent of cases. Read the rest

Florida: Mom Sues: "Circumcision is Unconstitutional Assault"

Via WorldNetDaily: A Florida mother who’s in hiding to prevent her son from being forcibly circumcised by the child’s father has now filed a federal lawsuit, claiming the boy’s constitutional rights are being violated.

The action by Heather Hironimus was filed late Monday in U.S. District Court in West Palm Beach, Florida, as she claims there is no medical justification to remove the foreskin from her boy, identified as C.R.N.H.

“(The) application of Florida law to impose unnecessary, elective, cosmetic circumcision upon C.R.N.H. at the age of 4 1/2 years old for no religious reason violates (the boy’s) fundamental right to privacy and bodily integrity secured by the due process clause of the 14th Amendment to the United States,” her attorney Thomas Hunker wrote.

The suit also says “forcing circumcision on C.R.N.H. constitutes assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, and/or child abuse under Florida law.”

According to South Florida’s New Times, a long list of alleged reasons for the procedure not to be performed are included in the suit:

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Bioethics Committee has declared that a minor’s input into surgical decisions must be heard and considered.

In contrast to the rare disease of penile cancer that occurs mostly in the elderly, breast cancer is far more common, but the law does not permit forcible removal of a female child’s healthy breasts in order to prevent the possibility that the child may one day develop breast cancer.

Penile cancer occurs in circumcised and uncircumcised males alike.

Circumcision does not significantly reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.

Penile cancer and sexually transmitted diseases can be adequately prevented by less invasive methods such as personal hygiene and safe sex.

As WND reported in March, Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Dana Gillen issued an arrest warrant for the mother for failing to appear before the court, and she has reportedly been living at a domestic-violence shelter.

Neither of the boy’s parents is Jewish, but the father testified last year he thinks circumcision is “just the normal thing to do.”

Nebraska Same-Sex Marriage Ban Unwavering

Nebraska should declare independence from the US.

(ABCNews) - As state bans on same-sex marriages fall across the country, some Nebraska officials are holding strong to that state's status of having one of the nation's most restrictive laws, which affects some of the most basic aspects of gay couples' lives — from driver's licenses to parenting rights.

Nebraska voters passed a state constitutional amendment in 2000 banning same-sex marriages, civil unions or even legalized domestic partnerships, and it has withstood all legal challenges. The state's hard-line stance is especially jarring when compared to neighboring Iowa, which was one of the first states to legalize same-sex marriage in 2009, says Charlie Joughin, spokesman for Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign.

"If you live in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and work in Omaha, just driving across the (Missouri) river, you immediately lose any and all legal connection to your spouse and your family," he said.

Federal appeals courts covering nearly half the United States will soon hear arguments on gay marriage, after numerous bans were struck down in the last eight months. A federal judge ruled Nebraska's ban was unconstitutional in 2005, but an 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel reversed the decision a year later.

Unconstitutional: Court makes major ruling on Oklahoma’s ban on gey marriage

OKLAHOMA CITY – The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals has made a major ruling in the case of Oklahoma’s ban on gay marriage.

The ruling states Oklahoma’s law is unconstitutional, saying same-sex couples have a Constitutional right to marry.

“Oklahoma’s efforts to retain its definition of marriage are benign, and very much unlike race-based restrictions on marriage invalidated in Loving v. Virginia,” the court ruled.

It continued by saying, “The court shortchanges the analysis of whether the fundamental right to marriage includes same-gender couples by asserting, “one might just as easily have argued that interracial couples are by definition excluded from the institution of marriage.”

“The Court has been vigilant in striking down impermissible constraints on the right to marriage, but there is nothing in the earlier cases suggesting that marriage has historically been defined as only an emotional union among willing adults,” the ruling stated.

Japan: Artist jailed for obscene vagina boat; vows to fight charges

(Reuters) - A Japanese artist who made figures of Lady Gaga and a kayak modeled on her vagina said on Wednesday from jail she was "outraged" by her arrest and vowed a court fight against obscenity charges.

Megumi Igarashi, 42, says she was challenging a culture of "discrimination" against discussion of the vagina in Japanese society.

Igarashi, who worked under the alias Rokudenashiko, which means "good-for-nothing girl" in Japanese, built a yellow kayak with a top shaped like her vagina after raising about $10,000 through crowdfunding.

Igarashi sent 3D printer data of her scanned vagina – the digital basis for her kayak project - as a thanks to a number of donors.

She was arrested for distributing indecent material on Saturday and faces up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.

Not again! Judge rules against democracy, says homosexuals have right to marry in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Same-sex couples have a right to marry in Kentucky, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.

In February, District Judge John G. Heyburn II had ruled that Kentucky must recognize gay marriages performed in other states.

"In America, even sincere and long-held religious beliefs do not trump the constitutional rights of those who happen to have been out-voted," Heyburn wrote to invalidate Kentucky's constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

In Tuesday's ruling in favor of two Louisville couples, Heyburn rejected the only justification that lawyers for Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear had offered — that traditional marriages contribute to a stable birth rate and the state's long-term economic stability.

"These arguments are not those of serious people," he said.

Two New York women called Ruth and Yuval – who only go by their first names, but don't let's judge – have formed a company called AR Wear (AR for Anti-Rape), which aims to produce "confidence and protection that can be worn".

These items of underwear, feature cut-resistant fabrics, a "reinforced skeletal structure" around the crotch, and combination locks around the thighs and waist which are intended to allow women to "feel safer" whether "on a first date", "clubbing", or "out for an evening run".

In their sales pitch, Ruth and Yuval are quick to point out that "rape is about as wrong as it gets" (thanks for that), and that "the only one responsible for a rape is the rapist". But, they argue, a woman will feel safer if she is wearing pants that are "very difficult for someone else to remove by either force or stealth (in situations where the victim cannot resist because she has had too much to drink, was drugged, or is asleep)".

The bizarre fundraising video – which looks like a cutesy Apple advert combined with, well, pants that are impossible to remove – includes shots of women smiling and having a boogie alongside footage of a man trying unsuccessfully to cut through the pants with a dagger. There's even a bit where a group of white women in mini-skirts walk confidently past a black man. But I'm going to gloss over that.

According to indiegogo, AR Wear has raised almost $35,000 so far, from about 1,700 individually funders. They have more than two weeks left, and seem certain to meet their goal of $50,000, which will see these pants become a reality. So not everybody thinks this the epitome of absurdity, then.

Toys R Us to stop gender biased marketing

(telegraph) - The toy store has bowed to pressure from campaign group Let Toys Be Toys to stop promoting toys as gender specific over concerns about the impact this has on children when they are growing up and developing their personalities.

Toys R Us will now draw up plans for how to make its marketing more inclusive, and remove explicit references to gender in store. Adverts will eventually show boys and girls playing with the same toys, such as kitchens, toy guns and lego.

Let Toys Be Toys, a campaign group run by parents, has called for the removal of gender bias, saying it restricts children’s choices.

Megan Perryman, Let Toys Be Toys campaigner, said: "Even in 2013, boys and girls are still growing up being told that certain toys are for them, while others are not. This is not only confusing but extremely limiting as it strongly shapes their ideas about who they are."

Toys R Us announced the move after meetings with the campaign group. Roger McLaughlan, managing director of the toy store, told the Independent: "We will work to ensure we develop the best plan for our customers."

Last weekend at the Turkey Creek Chick-Fil-A, Jennifer Day was breastfeeding her daughter, Kahlyn, in the play area at the Turkey Creek Chick-Fil-A. She was not using a cover.

When other customers complained, an employee approached her to express those concerns.

"An employee came up to me and told me some of the other parents were afraid of allowing their kids to play in the play area while I was feeding her, especially without any cover," Day said.

On Tuesday, a Chik Fil A spokesperson said the manager at that restaurant "...has apologized and regrets any offense he may have caused."
