(theindependent) - Staff at tech company Mozilla are calling for CEO Brendan Eich to resign a week after he took the job, after it emerged that he gave donations to an anti-LGBT campaign.
Eich contributed $1,000 (£601.11) in support of California’ Proposition 8 in 2008, an initiative which opposed same-sex marriage.
His controversial donation was discovered on a public database, with Mozilla named as his employer, in 2012, the Telegraph reported.
Eich was made CEO of Mozilla, which is behind the Firefox web browser, in late March after his predecessor Gary Kovacs announced his resignation in April last year.
He was previously the organisation’s chief technology officer, and has been associated with Mozilla in its various guises since the 1990s.
According to Mozilla, Eich invented JavaScript, the Internet’s most widely used programming language.

Will Moldova Be the Next Ukraine?
(thetrumpet.com) Russia’s recent deployment of troops in Crimea has Eastern European nations on edge. Concern is growing among leaders that the crisis in Ukraine could spread.
The Moldovan government is currently involved in signing a possible trade deal with the European Union. Reuters says the pact “is similar to that which Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich dumped, sparking the crisis which brought him down.”
Just like with Ukraine, Russia is using similar tactics to make sure the former Soviet Union state stays within its camp. “Moscow is now in the process of infiltrating the last pro-European republics in its sphere of influence,” writes Der Spiegel’s Christian Neef in an article titled “Russia Tries to Woo Back Moldova.”
According to Neef, Russia is now boycotting wine imports from Moldova, one of the country’s largest exports. Additionally, Russia is threatening to prevent the nearly 1 million Moldovans who work within Russia from sending money home to support their families.
Russia has also threatened to cut off its natural gas supply to Moldova—a move that would devastate the tiny agricultural nation. International Business Times editor Palash Ghosh says that what “Moldova lacks and desperately needs to keep its economy afloat—energy—now comes from Russia. In the event Moscow cuts off gas supplies, Moldova’s fragile economy could collapse.”
This has been the Russian strategy for years: bullying weaker and smaller nations into submission by threatening to cut off energy and destroy trade.
Russia has its supporters in Moldova though, just like in Ukraine.
In Gagauzia, a region in southern Moldova, over 98 percent of voters said they would choose closer relations with the Russian Customs Union than the EU.
Last week, Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca also expressed his deep fear of possible Russian involvement in an autonomous region of Moldova known as Transnistria. This region is being termed Moldova’s Crimea.
“Moldova has long faced its own secessionist threat in its autonomous Transnistria region, which broke away in 1992 after a brief war and also boasts a Russian military contingent—meaning the region is under de facto control of Moscow,” Ghosh continued.
“With a breakaway territory within its borders, where 2,500 Russian soldiers guard arms stocks from the Soviet era,” Reuters reported, “Moldova is looking on nervously at the crisis in Crimea, roughly 360 kilometers (225 miles) to the east along the Black Sea coast.”
If Moldova doesn’t comply with Russia’s commands, could Vladimir Putin use Transnistria to get a foothold over the nation, just like he used Crimea in Ukraine?

Doctor: ADHD Does Not Exist

-Over the course of my career, I have found more than 20 conditions that can lead to symptoms of ADHD, each of which requires its own approach to treatment. Raising a generation of children—and now adults—who can't live without stimulants is no solution.
- This Wednesday, an article in the New York Times reported that between 2008 and 2012 the number of adults taking medications for ADHD has increased by 53%, and that in the case of young American adults, it has nearly doubled. While this is a staggering statistic, and points to younger generations becoming frequently reliant on stimulants, frankly, I’m not too surprised. Over the course of my 50-year-long career in behavioral neurology and treating patients with ADHD, it has been in the past decade that I have seen these diagnoses truly skyrocket. Every day my colleagues and I see more and more people coming in claiming they have trouble paying attention at school and at work, and diagnosing themselves with “ADHD.”
And why shouldn’t they?
If someone finds it difficult to pay attention or feels somewhat hyperactive, “Attention-deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder” has those symptoms right there in its name. It’s an easy, catch-all phrase, which saves time for doctors to boot. But can we really lump all these people together? What if there are other things causing people to feel distracted? I don’t deny that we, as a population, are more distracted today than we ever were before. And I don’t deny that some of these patients who are distracted and impulsive need help. But what I do deny is the generally accepted definition of ADHD, which is long overdue for an update. In short, I’ve come to believe based on decades of treating patients that ADHD — as currently defined by the DSM and as it exists in the public imagination — does not exist.

Germans and Frenchmen dont want to see Ukraine in EU, oppose financial aid
The majority of citizens of France and Germany oppose Ukraine’s integration into the European Union and financial aid to the so-called Ukrainian democracy. A survey conducted by France's IFOP polling agency for the Le Figaro daily shows that more than 71 percent of respondents in France do not want to see Ukraine in the EU and 29 percent wouldn't mind if it happened.

A student from Blackpool [England] who claimed he was savagely beaten in an alleged homophobic attack has admitted causing the injuries himself. Richard Kennedy became an internet sensation after 182,000 people shared photos of his injuries that he had posted on Facebook. …He didn’t limit his tall tale to Facebook friends.
A caption on Kennedy’s images read: “An example [of] why homophobia is wrong and it’s disgusting that it’s still around in 2014″.
Kennedy posted graphic images of his injuries, including his face bloodied and bruised, teeth missing from his mouth and his knees badly wounded.
MailOnline reports that he told police that he had been set upon by a gang of homophobes when he left a gay club in Preston, prompting officers to launch an investigation and appeal for information on the perpetrators.This shouldn’t come as a surprise:
In his Facebook post, Kennedy spoke of being kicked to the ground and told of how “stupid” he was to walk home on his own. He wrote: “Here is my face after a homophobic attack: four of my teeth are gone, not fallen out but deep inside my gums and cheek… my face is swollen, both my knees are badly injured and I struggle to walk.
“My whole face is constantly throbbing and I’m now on four tablets a day for pain and infection and may require surgery to sort out the damage.
“All of this and what was their motive? Because of my f****** sexuality.”
He even told a local newspaper that he heard a group of men shouting homophobic abuse at him.
But now he admits he made it all up. After being shown CCTV footage of himself falling over onto the pavement, Kennedy accepted the attack never happened. Lancashire Police have also confirmed that CCTV footage showed Kennedy had never been attacked.Typically, the little darling will face no consequences for his illegal behavior.
Detective Inspector Paddy O’Neill said that Kennedy won’t be prosecuted for wasting police time: “We managed to recover some CCTV footage which shows the injured party falling face-first onto the pavement. We have showed him the CCTV and he now accepts his injuries were caused during the fall.That is to say, Kennedy filed a false police report and used Fakebook to broadcast deliberately inflammatory lies, but it was “in good faith” because he meant well. He was trying to advance official establishment dogma, according to which members of privileged groups are somehow “oppressed.”
“Having had oversight of the investigation… I accept his report was made in good faith.”

India: 66 students expelled for cheering on Pakistan cricket team

(foxnews) LUCKNOW, India – Dozens of Kashmiri students were expelled from their university and threatened with sedition charges because they cheered for the Pakistani cricket team during a televised match against India, police said Thursday.
Authorities were trying to track down the 66 students for questioning to determine whether sedition charges are appropriate, police officer N.K.S. Chauhan said. Sedition carries a possible life sentence.
Love of cricket -- a legacy of Britain's long colonial role -- is one of the few things on which Pakistan and India can usually agree, despite a long history of mutual animosity that has fueled three wars since the subcontinent's bloody partition in 1947.
But the fracas over Sunday's match -- which Pakistan won -- shows how easily passions are inflamed over Kashmir, a divided Himalayan territory that both countries claim. Insurgents have been fighting for Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan since 1989.

Survey finds many schools need repairs
WASHINGTON (AP) — More than half the nation's public schools need to be repaired, renovated or modernized, a survey released Thursday found.
Getting these schools in good condition would cost about $197 billion, the National Center for Education Statistics said. That's $4.5 million per school, on average.
The survey found that on average main school buildings were 44 years old. Schools that underwent a major renovation had the work done on average 12 years ago. Building replacements or additions were on average 16 years old.
There were signs of upgrades, however, in some schools. Seventeen percent of public schools had major repairs, renovations or modernization work underway, while nearly 40 percent had these types of improvements planned in the next two years.

(Reuters) - Crimea's parliament voted on Thursday to join Russia, and its Moscow-backed government set a referendum in 10 days, in a dramatic escalation of the crisis over the Ukrainian region that drew a sharp riposte from U.S. President Barack Obama.
Obama ordered sanctions on those responsible for Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine, including bans on travel to the United States and freezing of their U.S. assets.
He echoed European Union leaders and the pro-Western government in Ukraine in declaring that the proposed referendum would violate international law.
Obama also held a one-hour call on Thursday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, their second phone conversation in the past six days, and urged him to accept the terms of a potential diplomatic solution to the crisis.
The sudden acceleration of moves to bring Crimea, which has an ethnic Russian majority and has effectively been seized by Russian forces, formally under Moscow's rule came as EU leaders held an emergency summit, groping for ways to pressure Russia to back down and accept mediation.

Ukraine crisis 'awesome' for Norway gas: analyst
(thelocalnorway) - A long-term stand-off between Russia and the European Union over the Ukraine would be "a totally awesome situation" for Norway, one of the country's top analysts has told Norway's Dagens Næringsliv business newspaper
"If a long-term situation develops in which Russia uses sanctions to squeeze the EU, it will mean higher gas prices and higher production in Norway. It will be a totally awesome situation for Norway," John Olaisen, an analyst at ABG Sundal Collier said at a meeting on oil markets hosted by Ernst and Young.
Russia is Norway's main rival in European gas markets, supplying 25 percent of all gas consumed in the European Union, compared to the 20 percent supplied by Norway.
"If Russia restricts shipments to the EU by 20 percent over the next six months, then Norway can increase production by 20 percent. It's very positive. It sounds a little cynical, but that's how it is. For Statoil it will be awesome."

Scott Lively is being sued by the organization Sexual Minorities Uganda, which alleges that his actions in Uganda over the past ten years led to the persecution, torture, arrest and murder of gay people in the country. The New York Times reported:
“The lawsuit alleges that beginning in 2002, Mr. Lively conspired with religious and political leaders in Uganda to whip up anti-gay hysteria with warnings that homosexuals would sodomize African children and corrupt their culture.”
