Hispanics To Surpass 'White' Population In California.

(Politico) State demographers say California’s Hispanic population will equal that of whites within six months and exceed it early next year — a milestone in the country’s racial and ethnic shifts.

Population projections released Thursday by the state Department of Finance show that Hispanics will become the dominant ethnic group in California for the first time.

By 2020, demographers say Hispanics will be about 41 percent of California’s population, with whites less than 37 percent.

Egypt Nearing 'State Collapse.'

- (AP) Residents of this Mediterranean coastal city burying their dead from Egypt’s wave of political violence vented their fury at Egypt’s Islamist president and the Muslim Brotherhood on Tuesday (29), demanding his ouster and virtually declaring a revolt against his rule, as the head of the military warned Egypt may collapse under the weight of its turmoil.

Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’ strongly worded comments, his first since the crisis began, appeared aimed at pushing both sides in Egypt’s political divide to reconcile and find a solution to the rapidly spreading protests and riots across much of the country the past six days.

But his breaking of his silence falls heaviest on President Mohammed Morsi, who has been unable to contain the unrest by trying a tough hand, as protesters defied his declaration of a month-long state of emergency and curfew in Port Said and two neighboring cities.

New Drug Bill 'To Legalise Ecstasy' In Colombia.

(BBCNews) - Colombia's Justice Minister, Ruth Stella Correa, has said a new drugs bill would legalise the personal use of synthetic drugs, such as ecstasy.

The proposal would replace current laws, which ban cocaine and marijuana, although people are not prosecuted for possessing small amounts.

Colombia's legislation is being re-assessed in an attempt to tackle drug use, trafficking and related issues.

Critics say the inclusion of synthetic drugs will only confuse the debate.

The justice minister spoke after a meeting with the commission set up to assess the government's drug policies over the last 10 years.

Former President Cesar Gaviria is part of the group along a number of experts and academics expected to produce a document with recommendations within eight months.

Ruth Stella Correa pointed out that the Constitutional Court had already spoken against the criminalisation of people carrying small amounts of marijuana and cocaine.

"The new statute to be presented to the Congress during this mandate intends to make this authorisation concrete, but broadening it to include synthetic drugs into what is defined as the personal dose", the minister
told Colombia's National Radio.

Minnesota Spends $3,400 To Teach Orgasm.

- The University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus is spending more than US$3,400 to put on a seminar for “orgasm aficionados and beginners of all genders” to discuss their sex lives.

The event, reported by CampusReform.org, is promoted online as “A Program About Sexual Health and Women’s Empowerment.”

“Are you coming?” the promotion asks.

The event is planned this spring by the university’s Office of Diversity and Equity’s Women’s Center, and it does not list an age limit.

In fact, university spokeswoman Patricia Mattern told Campus Reform today in an email that there is not age requirement.

“This educational workshop is open to the full university community, and participation is voluntary,” she told the organization. “As a research institution, we study, publish and educate on a vast range of topics, including human sexuality.”

She told Campus Reform the program costs $3,406.

Scheduled teachers are “sex educators” Marshall Miller and Kate Weinberg. The program also is getting support from the Women’s Student Activist Collective, Aurora Center for Advocacy & Education and GLBTA Programs Office.

A website for Miller states: “In our programs we use a mixture of interactive activities, lecture, discussion, multimedia, funny stories, and question and answer. Nothing embarrasses us, and no topic is too basic or too risqué.”

The website notes that an important role for students to play in getting the seminar onto a campus to discuss sex is to “Raise the cash you’ll need to bring us in.”

A poster promoting the event says it will focus on “sexuality and pleasure.”

The website notes Weinberg was inspired to the work when she realized how sexuality “is a thing so intimately connected to politics, religion, guilt, expectation, the ways in which we live and are allowed to live.”

“She’s a certified yoga instructor and the author of an acclaimed young adult novel. Kate lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., and has long wished that she could be a mermaid,” the site explains.

Miller is a trainer of teachers for the Unitarian Universalist and United Church of Christ “Our Whole Lives” sexuality education program.

The Minnesota school says the eventer in April, is for all, “whether you want to learn how to have your first orgasm, how to have better ones, or how to help your girlfriend.”

Netherlands Queen Beatrix To Abdicate Throne In Favour Of Son.

Good Riddance.

(Telegraph) - In a short televised speech, the Dutch Queen said it was time to place the nation “in the hands of a new generation”.

Queen Beatrix turns 75 in just a few days and is already the country’s oldest ever monarch. Both her mother, Queen Julianna, and her grandmother, Queen Wilhelmina, also abdicated and the Dutch do not see being king or queen as a job for life.

“I am not abdicating because this office is too much of a burden, but out of conviction that the responsibility for our nation should now rest in the hands of a new generation,” Queen Beatrix said, in a speech delivered from her Huis ten Bosch palace.

“I am deeply grateful for the great faith you have shown in me in the many years that I could be your Queen,” she added.

The Dutch Queen praised her eldest son, Prince Willem-Alexander, as a talented and capable successor 'fully prepared’ for his future role.

She said he would assume the throne on April 30 at the high point of a year of celebrations to mark the end of the Napoleonic occupation in 1813. The Kingdom of the Netherlands was then established two years later.

Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister, also broadcast to the nation to thank Queen Beatrix for her long record of service to the nation. “Since her coronation in 1980s she’s applied herself heart and soul for Dutch society,” he said. “She has grown into a Dutch icon.”

The Queen’s abdication signals the end of the reign of one of Europe’s longest serving monarchs. She assumed the throne in 1980 when her mother, Queen Julianna, stepped down after 32 years. Her grandmother, Queen Wilhelmina, abdicated in 1948 after a reign of 58 years.

6 Hilariously Failed Attempts At Making Comics More Diverse.

(Cracked) - Diversity in superhero comics is a good thing. In a genre embarrassingly dominated by lantern-jawed white men and scantily clad babes, it's refreshing when writers and artists acknowledge that heroes can come from any race, gender, or nation. However, this doesn't necessarily reflect a change in the people who write the comics, and often their efforts to create the characters made it appear that they had never actually spoken to any non-white person in their lives. And so we wound up with ...

Myanmar to U.S: "Stop using 'Burma' while referring to our glorious nation!"

(Reuters) - Myanmar took a swipe at the United States on Saturday for calling the country Burma, urging it to use its official title and avoid harming improving ties between the two former foes.

In a response to a press statement issued by the U.S. embassy in Yangon on the conflict in northern Kachin state, the Foreign Ministry said Washington should be following most countries and the United Nations and call it Myanmar.

The issue has struck a chord with the civilian-led government, which has won the recognition of the international community following political, social and economic reforms introduced after it replaced an oppressive military junta in March 2011.

"Myanmar strongly objects to the usage of the words 'Burma', 'Burmese government' and 'Burmese military' in the U.S. embassy's press release and not using the name recognized by the United Nations and the whole international community," the ministry said in a statement carried in state-controlled newspapers.

It said U.S. President Barack Obama had called the country Myanmar during his landmark visit late last year, so the embassy should follow his example.

New Zealand Environmental Advocate Launches Campaign To Ban Cats As Pets.

(foxnews.com) - Gareth Morgan has a simple dream: a New Zealand free of pet cats that threaten native birds. But the environmental advocate has triggered a claws-out backlash with his new anti-feline campaign.

Morgan called on his countrymen Tuesday to make their current cat their last in order to save the nation's unique bird species. He set up a website, called Cats To Go, depicting a tiny kitten with red devil's horns. The opening line: "That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer."

He doesn't recommended people euthanize their current cats "Not necessarily but that is an option" are the site's exact words -- but rather neuter them and not replace them when they die. Morgan, an economist and well-known businessman, also suggests people keep cats indoors and that local governments make registration mandatory.

Morgan's campaign is not sitting well in a country that boasts one of the highest cat ownership rates in the world.

E.U 'Needs Britain' Says Swedish Finance Minister.

(Telegraph.co.uk) - Anders Borg said it was not realistic to think Frankfurt or Paris could compete with New York and Hong Kong, saying there was no practical alternative to the City.

“For Sweden, keeping Britain in the EU is a very high priority. We have a big banking sector and a lot of work goes through the City of London. If the UK leaves the EU it could create a lot of problems,” he said.

“It is important for Europe to have a financial hub. It is not realistic to think that Frankfurt or Paris can compete.”

He expressed some sympathy for David Cameron’s decision to hold an in-out EU referendum in 2017, but said Sweden would not be following suit. Like the UK, Sweden is a member of the EU but not of the euro.

“We see the euro countries moving in a direction we don’t believe in. To create a club within a club is not great for us. The British concerns are obvious – how are we going to find a long-term working relationship,” he said.

A number of EU leaders said they would be better off with Britain as a member. “The UK is a growth orientated country – and they share our values on openness and free trade. They help drive those agendas,” he said.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, said: “Denmark, Sweden, the UK – we need them to stay in the union. They are focused on economic prosperity. We need that inspiration.”

Mr Rutte, Mr Borg and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said enormous growth could be generated if the EU properly opened up its single market in services and digital technology, as well as finalising free trade agreements with North America and Japan.

The UK has been at the forefront of efforts to push those up the EU agenda.

Mr Borg added: “It is vital for all of us that the UK to stay in.”

Mali Conflict: France: 'Our Goal Is The Total Reconquest Of Mali.'

I smell bull sh*t.

- While blowback from Libya is felt in Mali, and from Mali in Algeria, recent comments from British and French leaders lay bare western powers’ perception of conflict in Islamic lands through the lense of the war on terror that sees “terrorists” that must be stopped through military force with little thought given to the price that will be paid for the involvement.

As France continues to drop bombs on its former colony of Mali, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian left no doubt of his country’s goal there.

“The goal is the total reconquest of Mali. We will not leave any pockets” of resistance, Le Drian said on France 5 television.

Multiple People Wounded In Texas School Shooting.

- Multiple people were shot in a shooting at Lone Star College in north Houston, Texas some time before 12:50 PM. Police are describing the incident as an “altercation between two individuals,” one of whom had student ID and a hand gun. Both are now in police custody and experienced gun wounds. A maintenance man was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the leg. A woman on the scene was hospitalized for a medical condition.

The Lone Star website states that the college employs armed police officers and unarmed security guards. Five days ago, Texas Sen. Brian Birdwell (R) and 13 other Republican authors introduced legislation that would allow individuals with concealed weapon permits to carry firearms on campus. The measure failed in the last legislative session, but is now up for debate in the aftermath of the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Responding to today’s incident, Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) told KTRK’s Ted Oberg that students were “defenseless” during the shooting and said that public colleges should decide whether or not teachers and students can carry weapons on campus.

KTRK reports that the Lone Start shooting in Texas is the nation’s 5th school shooting in 2013. The U.S. experienced 49 shootings since Columbine in 1999.

Barack Obama Sworn In For Second Term As U.S President.

Barack Obama has been sworn in for a second term as President of the United States of America in a private White House ceremony.

Mr Obama was officially sworn in at a very brief ceremony in the Blue Room of the White House, taking the oath from Chief Justice John Roberts using his wife Michelle's family bible.

He will be sworn in again at a time-honoured public ceremony at the Capitol in Washington on Monday.

Honoring tradition, Joe Biden, the vice-president, was sworn in before his boss at an early morning ceremony at his official residence, before the two laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Ceremony.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor - picked by Mr Obama to be the first Hispanic judge to sit on the High Court in his first term - made her own slice of history by leading Biden as he took the oath.

Chief Justice Roberts was able to avoid a repeat of 2009 when he stumbled over the oath, prompting the White House to request a redo the following day.

'Anti-Racism' Rally Held In Athens After Immigrant Stabbing.

Multiculturalism In Action.

- Hundreds of demonstrators on Saturday (1/19) paraded the coffin in central Athens of a Pakistani immigrant who was stabbed to death earlier this week, praying and opening the casket to show his face in protest at racist attacks in the country.

About 5,000 immigrants and human rights activists later gathered in the city's central Omonia square, police said, to demonstrate against racism, holding banners reading "Neo-Nazis out" and "Punishment for the fascist murderers of Shehzad Luqman".

Girl Gang Raped Under Desk As Teacher Did Nothing.

- A mentally challenged 15-year-old girl was gang-raped beneath her desk during class — only feet away from her teachers — at an Elmont, N.Y., school, according to a lawsuit filed January 11.

When the girl reported the horrific incident the next day, school officials failed to report it, the victim’s mother claimed in the suit.

The special-needs teen, known by the initials K.J., was allegedly sexually assaulted for 10 minutes under her desk by two teenage boys, as another “hit her on the head whenever she tried to escape,” during science class at Martin De Porres Academy, claims the lawsuit.

The sick brutes also tried to anally sodomize her while one of them danced on her desk — all without attracting the attention of her teachers, said lawyer Madeline Bryer.

Minnesota Senate Subcommittee Starts Sales Tax Debate.

- In a prelude to a bigger debate, Minnesota lawmakers have taken their opening looks at plans to apply the state sales tax to online purchases and expensive apparel.

A state Senate subcommittee on Wednesday reviewed a series of sales tax bills, including the one to make clothing sales above $200 taxable. No votes were taken, but lawmakers are just plunging into a debate over how to balance the budget and remake the tax code.

The clothing tax is the more controversial of the two. A Mall of America official says an apparel tax would hurt tourism because the current no-tax pitch is powerful.

Business groups with a major Capitol presence want the state to collect sales taxes on Internet purchases, saying it would erase a competitive disadvantage for brick-and-mortar stores.

Income Tax Could Be Eliminated By Many Republican-Controlled States.

- Hopes for overhauling the federal tax system are fading in Washington, but in some state capitals, tax reform experiments – some far-reaching – are fast taking shape.

Across the U.S. South and Midwest, Republicans have consolidated control of state legislatures and governorships, giving them the power to test long-debated tax ideas.

Louisiana Republican Governor Bobby Jindal, for instance, called on Thursday for ending the state’s income tax and corporate taxes, with sales taxes compensating for lost revenue.

A similar plan is being pushed by Republicans in North Carolina. Kansas, which cut its income tax significantly last year, may trim further. Oklahoma, which tried to cut income taxes last year, is expected to try again.

"Our goal is to eliminate all personal income tax and all corporate income tax in a revenue neutral manner," Jindal said in the statement.

He did not confirm reports that he will seek an increase in sales taxes in order to offset lost income tax revenue, but said: "We want to keep the sales tax as low and flat as possible."

Obama Admin. To Britain: We'd Really Prefer That You Not Exit The European Union.

- There has been much ado lately about the eventual possibility of the United Kingdom bowing out of the European Union, and last summer, British Prime Minister David Cameron hinted that his government may be considering holding a national referendum on the subject in the not too distant future. Apparently, Cameron’s real end game with the idea is to win back to British sovereignty certain powers now administered through E.U cooperation rules, but he may have gotten the “Brexit” ball rolling a little faster than he intended. For months, the government has been delaying the “big Europe speech” he’s meant to give to thoroughly explain the whole thing, and it’s finally slated to happen in mid-January.

Meanwhile, the idea of Britain legitimately getting the hell out of EU-dodge is gaining in steam and popularity, and maybe even enough to put in a showing by the time the referendum would roll around if the EU keeps on flailing. The Obama administration is not at all pleased with the situation, and senior administration official is making it clear that Washington does not want Britain to call it quits.

White House Petition Calls For Obama Admin. To Designate The Catholic Church As A 'Hate Group.'

- On Christmas Day, a petition was added to the White House web site, urging the U.S. government to “officially recognize the Roman Catholic Church as a "hate group.” According to a brief description accompanying the plea, the basis for the designation is the church’s stance on same-sex marriage and homosexuality.

“In his annual Christmas address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Benedict XVI, the global leader of the Roman Catholic Church, demeaned and belittled homosexual people around the world,” the petition reads. “Using hateful language and discriminatory remarks, the Pope painted a portrait in which gay people are second-class global citizens.”

The text goes on to note that Pope Benedict claimed that same-sex families “are threatening to society.” The individual behind the initiative accused the Catholic leader of implying that gays are also “sub-human.” As a result of the pope’s recent words, the petition argues that the Church meets the criteria to be called a hate group by both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.

The effort to urge condemnation from the White House was sparked by Pope Benedict’s Christmas message. As TheBlaze previously reported (as per AP), the Catholic leader has taken his opposition to gay marriage to new heights with a strong denunciation of how people today are manipulating their sex and gender to alter their God-given nature.

Congress Confirms Obama, Biden Won U.S. Election.

- The Congress formally confirmed on Friday, nearly two months after polls closed, that President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden won the 2012 White House election.

At a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives, lawmakers carried out the final phase of a process known as the Electoral College that dates back to the founding of the nation.

They verified the vote of 538 electors from the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, each of whom represented a presidential and vice presidential candidate. Electors were picked on Election Day, based on the popular vote.

In approving and then adding up individual certification documents, they confirmed that Democrats Obama and Biden beat Republican challengers Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, 332-206. At least 270 electoral votes are needed to win.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Biden, as Senate president, presided over the process that lasted about 30 minutes.
