Minnesota 'Gay Marriage' Bill Unveiled At Capitol (Ste. Paul)

(ABCNews)- Lawmakers formally launched a long-anticipated effort Wednesday to legalize gay marriage in Minnesota by summer, and gay couples and their small children crowded the kickoff news conference - a visual reminder that family diversity exists in the state but is not recognized by its laws.

Arguing that such families deserve the same recognition from the state as more traditional ones, sponsors of the gay marriage bill aim to repeal Minnesota's 1997 law that prohibited marriage between couples of the same sex. The bill exempts churches from being forced to perform same-sex weddings.

Gay marriage supporters point to last fall's defeat of the constitutional gay marriage ban as the starting point for what they hope is a final push to legalize it. Gov. Mark Dayton has said he would sign the bill if it reaches his desk; if that happens, same-sex weddings would commence on Aug. 1.

But Republicans opposed to gay marriage said supporters got the wrong message from defeat of the marriage amendment.

Beer Drinkers Accuse Anheuser-Busch Of Watering Down Brews.

(ChicagoTribune) - Beer drinkers in three U.S. states filed lawsuits accusing brewing giant Anheuser-Busch of watering down and mislabeling Budweiser, Michelob and other brands to cut costs.

The lawsuits, filed in the last week in California, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, said the brewing giant cheated consumers by listing a higher alcohol content than the beers actually contained.

Ten Anheuser-Busch products were named in the lawsuits: Budweiser, Michelob, Michelob Ultra, Bud Ice, Bud Light Platinum, Hurricane High Gravity Lager, King Cobra, Busch Ice, Natural Ice and Bud Light Lime.

Former employees at the company’s 13 breweries - including some in high-level positions - are cooperating with the plaintiffs, said San Rafael, Calif., lawyer Josh Boxer, the lead attorney in the case.

“Our information comes from former employees at Anheuser-Busch, who have informed us that as a matter of corporate practice, all of their products [mentioned in the lawsuit] are watered down,” Boxer said, according to the Associated Press. “It's a simple cost-saving measure, and it's very significant.”

The excess water is added just before bottling and cuts the stated alcohol content by 3% to 8%, he said.

Anheuser-Busch InBev called the claims “groundless” and said its beers fully comply with labeling laws.

Britain: 'Whites' Are Now Minority In London.

- White British people are now in a minority in London for the first time, it emerged today as census data revealed that the immigrant population of England and Wales went up by 3 million over the past decade.

Just 3.7 million Londoners described their ethnicity as ‘White British’ in 2011 – down from 4.3 million in 2001, and making up 44.9 per cent of the city’s population.

It is believed to be the first time that British whites have become a minority in any region of the UK.
Another major change to the nation came in the decreasing number of Christians – 4 million fewer people claimed to belong to the faith as a quarter of Britons said they had no religion.

In 2011, 7.5 million residents were foreign-born, making up 13 per cent, or one in eight of the population – up from 4.6 million people in 2001.

The total population of England and Wales was 56.1 million, a seven per cent increase on 2001 – and 55 per cent of the increase is due to migration.

There were 33.2million people claiming to be Christian, down from 37.3million in 2001 and making up just 59 per cent of the population.

25.1 per cent of people said they had no faith, up from 14.8 per cent a decade earlier, while the proportion of Muslims rose from 3.0 per cent to 4.8 per cent.

India: Christians Face Threat From Hindus?

(wnd.com) - DELHI, India – Indian Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde says his nation faces an increasing terrorism threat from self-proclaimed “right-wing” Hindu groups, and that’s bad news for Christians here.

In a report on India television network NDTV Shinde said ultra-nationalist Hindu groups have formed camps to train operatives to carry out attacks.

“Groups like RSS are a threat to India,” he said.

That would be Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which states on its website: “Sangh is not a mere reaction to one or another social or political aberration. It represents a corpus of thought and action firmly rooted in genuine nationalism.”

The group states its movement is a response to colonialism and any anti-nationalist movement in India, including religious movements.

Saudi Arabia: 53 Ethiopian Christians Arrested For Praying In Private Home.

Diversity Is Strength!

(AsiaNews) - Saudi Arabia has arrested 53 Ethiopian Christians - 46 women and six men - for holding a prayer meeting in a private home. Police officials have sealed the house and taken the faithful away, accusing the three religious leaders present of attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity. The incident occurred at Dammam, the capital of the Eastern Province of the Kingdom, and dates to February 8, but local sources, linked to the World Evangelical Alliance's Religious Liberty Commission (WEA-Rlc) recently reported the news.

According to the WEA-RLC, Saudi authorities should release two of the Christians who hold residency permits. In all likelihood, all the others will be deported.

Saudi Arabia does not recognize, or protect, any religious expression other than Islam. The religious police (muttawa) carries out controls to eliminate the presence of Bibles, rosaries, Crosses and Christian assemblies. And even if the royal family allows religious practices other than Islam, at least in private, muttawa agents tend not to differentiate.

This is not the first episode of religious persecution against the Ethiopian community. In December 2011, the Saudi authorities arrested 35 Ethiopian Christians, 29 of them women, charging them with "illegal socialization." In this case, the faithful were detained in the middle of a prayer meeting in a private home in Jeddah. According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), the imprisoned women were subjected to arbitrary "medical inspections".

The city of Dammam, where the accident occurred on February 8, is a major industrial center and port, rich in oil and natural gas.

8 US States That Shouldn't Even Exist.

8. TEXAS.

WHY IT SHOULDN’T EXIST: Because Texas isn’t a state; it’s a freaking country. It’s more than 50,000 square miles larger than France and boasts a population greater than three-quarters of all the countries on Earth.

As such, it should not be too surprising that Texas was annexed into the United States in 1845 with the intent that it be carved into as many as five separate states.

WHY WE’RE STUCK WITH IT: After several unsuccessful attempts to mess with Texas…
Texas decided to continue doing things their own way and seceded after only 15 years in the Union. After the Confederacy got beat like a drum during the American Civil War, states like Texas were readmitted to the Union on the condition that they did as they were told for once. Specifically, no more slavery. Since curbing slavery was the primary reason for splitting Texas up in the first place, all Civil War-related matters has been pretty quiet in Texas until a few years ago.

7. LOUISIANA.

WHY IT SHOULDN’T EXIST: Because purchasing the Louisiana Territory — all 828,800 square miles of it — was not even up for discussion when James Monroe and Robert R. Livingston were sent to Paris to negotiate the sale of New Orleans. It was like they asked for a plate of pancakes and were instead offered the whole restaurant plus the entire country attached to it for a few dollars more.

WHY WE’RE STUCK WITH IT: The House of Representatives tried to kill the sale on numerous grounds, almost all of them stemming from how President Jefferson built his presidency on how such a move was unconstitutional.

The issue was ultimately decided in a narrow 59-57 vote. Had two congressmen voted otherwise, there’s a good chance that the US would have never extended beyond the Mississippi.

6. VERMONT.

WHY IT SHOULDN’T EXIST: Because the whole issue over whatever the hell Vermont was nearly led to war between New York State and the Vermont Republic. Hostilities cooled once New York allowed the Vermont Republic to be annexed as a state, even if it meant admitting that Vermont was the Danny DeVito to New York’s Arnold Schwarzenegger.

WHY WE’RE STUCK WITH IT: Slavery. The US needed free states to offset the addition of slave states into the Union, and was desperate for anything to maintain the balance. Vermont was eventually added as a free state, Kentucky as a slave state, and that was the end of that. Oh wait, no… There is currently a secessionist group within Vermont called the Second Vermont Republic that is still fighting for the Vermont Republic right down to their crappy flag.

5. WEST VIRGINIA.

WHY IT SHOULDN’T EXIST: Because it would’ve remained part of Virginia if it wasn’t because of that damn Civil War. West Virginians had few slaves up in their mountains, and figured “fuck this… we’re leaving.” That’s right, the state of West Virginia actually seceded from the South.

WHY WE’RE STUCK WITH IT: Because West Virginia was never added back into Virginia once the Civil War ended even though quite a few people wanted to. Virginians actually took this all the way to the US Supreme Court in 1871, and the Virginia General Assembly repealed the act of secession. However, by this time Congress had already passed a resolution in 1866 recognizing the transfer, the Virginia General Assembly be damned. The Supreme Court voted in favor of West Virginians, and that was the end of that.

Besides, do you have any idea how hard it is to take a star down from the US flag once it’s already been added?

4. & 3. KANSAS & NEBRASKA.

WHY IT SHOULDN’T EXIST: They were created for the sole purpose of building a transcontinental railroad, which pissed the hell out of the South since it meant more free states. As a compromise, they decided to have settlers resolve the slavery question themselves in Kansas by popular vote. This exploded into a goddamn backwoods guerrilla war between the free people of Kansas and pro-slave settlers from Missouri in a civil war known as Bleeding Kansas.

WHY WE’RE STUCK WITH THEM: Once the Civil War started, all bets were off. Kansas was added to the Union in 1861 as a free state since the North no longer at Southern congressmen beating the shit out of them on the floor of the Senate.

2. Maine.

WHY IT SHOULDN’T EXIST: Because Maine was originally part of Massachusetts Bay Colony, and probably would have stayed that way had it not been for the Missouri Compromise. Once again, the pro-slave South wanted to add a few slave states to the Union, forcing the North to search frantically for even more new states to offset them. Since you could tell just by looking at the map that Massachusetts and Maine have little in common, the compromisers figured “Hey, let’s just make New Canada into a state,” and the rest is history.

WHY WE’RE STUCK WITH IT: Considering the incredible heroes Maine producing during the American Civil War, the US should consider itself lucky that Maine didn’t quit the Union and join Canada up at that point.

1. Florida.

WHY IT SHOULDN’T EXIST: Because it’s not a state — it’s a spoil. Andrew Jackson simply took it over for the hell of it and told the government to figure out whatever the hell they wanted to do with it. The US responded by flat-out declaring that half of Florida was theirs, and then annexed the other half after promising Spain that the US had no interest in Texas. We all know how long that promise lasted.

WHY WE’RE STUCK WITH IT: The state survived secession during the Civil War and helped steal two elections. Once again, it’s simply a power-chip that’s constantly changing hands, and nobody wants to part with it any time soon.

Ecuador's Correa Cruises To Re-Election Victory.

DEMOCRACY!

(Reuters) - Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa swept to a re-election victory on Sunday that allows him to strengthen state control over the OPEC nation's economy and gives a timely boost to Latin America's alliance of socialist leaders.

The charismatic leftist had 57 percent support compared with 24 percent for runner-up Guillermo Lasso, with almost 40 percent of votes counted. The electoral authority said it did not expect the results to change significantly.

"Nobody can stop this revolution," a jubilant Correa told supporters from the balcony of the presidential palace, after claiming victory.

"The colonial powers are not in charge anymore. You can be sure that in this revolution it's Ecuadoreans in control."

The combative, U.S.-trained economist took power in 2007 and has won strong support among the poor by using booming oil revenues to build roads, hospitals and schools in rural areas and shantytowns.

"Our Ecuador needs a president like Rafael Correa. He has been strong and has not allowed anyone to intimidate him," said Julieta Moira, 46, who is unemployed, as she celebrated outside the presidential palace. "I'm very excited, happy and thankful."

Supporters also gathered in a park in the upscale north end of Quito, waving the signature neon-green flags of Correa's Alianza Pais party.

Correa, 49, may now be in line to become Latin America's main anti-American voice and de facto leader of the ALBA bloc of leftist governments as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has been silenced during his battle with cancer.

Correa said he dedicated his victory to Chavez.

Iceland To Consider Pornography Ban.

Iceland could become the first Western democracy to attempt censorship of the internet under radical proposals to block online pornography.

(Telegraph) - The government is considering introducing internet filters, such as those used to block China off form the worldwide web, in order to stop Icelanders downloading or viewing pornography on the internet.

The unprecedented censorship is justified by fears about damaging effects of the internet on children and women.

Ogmundur Jonasson, Iceland's interior minister, is drafting legislation to stop the access of online pornographic images and videos by young people through computers, games consoles and smartphones.

"We have to be able to discuss a ban on violent pornography, which we all agree has a very harmful effects on young people and can have a clear link to incidences of violent crime," he said.

Methods under consideration include blocking access to pornographic website addresses and making it illegal to use Icelandic credit cards to access pay-per-view pornography.

Minnesota: High School Food Fight Turns Into Multicultural Race War.

Diversity Is Strength!

(WCCO - Minneapolis) - A number of police cars responded to Minneapolis South High School Thursday after an alleged food fight escalated into a melee involving 200 to 300 students.

The school posted a note on its website stating the it went on a precautionary code yellow lockdown due to “a food fight that escalated into a physical fight.”

The school said Thursday night that classes are still scheduled for Friday.

Sgt. William Palmer, of the Minneapolis Police Department, said no weapons were involved in the incident. However, four people were taken to the hospital following the melee.

Those taken to the hospital were a school staff member, who was hit in the head with a bottle, and three students, who suffered injuries unrelated to the fight, the school said. It did not elaborate on what injured the three students.

Twelve people complained that they had been sprayed with mace. Police at the scene said they had to use chemical agent to get the crowd under control as they were being pelted with objects as they tried to break things up.

The main incident occurred during the school’s third period lunch, around 12:45 p.m., and lasted about 15 minutes. About 20 staff members responded to the incident and followed security procedures, according to the school.

Students Taught: It's Unfair To Be 'White.'

(wnd.com) - Despite the longstanding message that a person’s skin color should not matter in America, students at the University of Wisconsin – Superior are now being taught that it’s “unfair” to be white.

It’s part of a controversial effort known as the Unfair Campaign, designed to teach America’s youth that “systems and institutions are set up for us [whites]” and as such are “unfair.”

One of the main slogans for the campaign is: “It’s hard to see racism when you’re white.”

CampusReform reports the campaign was initially sponsored by the University of Minnesota – Duluth, but after an investigation conducted by CampusReform, that college dropped its partnership, and labeled the program “divisive” and “alienating.”

The Unfair Campaign uses online videos, billboards and lectures to help promote its message, and a variety of posters features white-skinned people adorned with facial messages such as, “Is white skin really fair skin?”

UWS spokeswoman Lynn Williams told CampusReform that her school is using the campaign as an “opportunity on our campus to talk about all privilege and to create conversation.”

“We really felt that this was an opportunity for the campus and the neighboring community to learn and to grow together,” she added.

Williams indicated UWS has already held a number of “diversity dialogues” tied to the Unfair Campaign, with some professors talking about the project in class.

Vatican Confirms Pope To Resign, Conspiracy & Controversy Ensue.

- After only eight years on the papal throne, Pope Benedict XVI resigned his post as the head of the Catholic Church earlier today.

The resignation, the first by a pope in nearly 600 years, caught the world by surprise and set off a frenzied international debate about why exactly the pope resigned, why the Vatican and even Benedict’s closest aides were left in the dark about the impending resignation, and who the next pope will be.

Ethiopia Church Severs Ties With Lutherans Over Homosexuality.

(ChristianPost) - An Evangelical denomination in Ethiopia has recently announced that it is severing ties with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and it sister church, the Church of Sweden, because of its position regarding homosexuality in the church.

The denomination, known as the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, also announced that it will not be affiliated with any churches "who have openly accepted same-sex marriage," and from this point onward may not accept Holy Communion from ELCA pastors, nor are they allowed to distribute Holy Communion to ELCA members.

Another stipulation of this severing is that any leaders affiliated with the ELCA will not be invited to speak at the Mekane Yesus church, nor may they accompany the church on spiritual ministries.

Prime Minister Cameron Urges Scotland Not To Go It Alone.

(Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron conceded on Sunday that Scotland had what it takes to be an independent nation, but said it currently enjoyed "the best of both worlds", imploring it not to break the United Kingdom apart.

Stepping up his government's campaign to hold Britain together ahead of an independence referendum expected next year, Cameron urged Scotland not to sever a union with England that dates back 306 years.

"Put simply: Britain works. Britain works well. Why break it?" he wrote in an article published in Scottish newspapers.

"This big question is for Scotland to decide. But the answer matters to all of our United Kingdom. Scotland is better off in Britain. We're all better off together and poorer apart."

Virginia Closer To Creating States Own Currency.

(Washingtonpost)  Virginia Del. Robert G. Marshall fears that a financial apocalypse is coming and only one thing can save the Commonwealth: its own currency.

The idea that Virginia should consider issuing its own money was dismissed as just another quixotic quest by one of the most conservative members of the state legislature when Marshall introduced it three years ago. But it has since gained traction not only in Virginia, but also in states across the country as Americans have grown increasingly suspicious of the institutions entrusted with safeguarding the economy.

This week, the proposal by the Prince William Republican sailed through the House of Delegates with a two-to-one majority.

“This is a serious study about a serious topic,” Marshall said Tuesday. “We’re not completely powerless.”

Canada Ditches Its Penny.

(Telegraph) - The Royal Canadian Mint on Monday officially ended its distribution of pennies to financial institutions. Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced last year they were a nuisance and have outlived their purpose.

While people may still use pennies, the government has issued guidelines urging store owners to start rounding prices to the nearest nickel for cash transactions. Electronic purchases will still be billed to the nearest cent.

The government has said the cost of producing the penny exceeds its monetary value. Production is $11 million (£7 million) a year.

The coins, which feature two maple leaves and Queen Elizabeth II in profile, will remain legal tender until they eventually disappear from circulation.

Opposition New Democrat Member of Parliament Pat Martin gave a poetic goodbye to the penny in Parliament on Monday

"There's nothing a penny will buy any more, not a gum ball or small piece of candy," Mr Martin said. "Note the penny is a nuisance. It costs too much to make. They clutter our change purse and they don't circulate. They build up in piles in old cookie jars under our beds and in our desk drawers. You can't give them away. They cost more than what they're worth.

"It's time to put them all out to pasture, put them out to the curb. No, the penny is useless, but there is one thing I'd say, I hope they don't start treating old MPs this way."

Google is marking the passing of the penny with a dedicated doodle on its Canadian home page.

The currency museum at Canada's central bank has already taken steps to preserve the penny's place in Canadian culture. A mural consisting of nearly 16,000 one-cent pieces has been assembled at the museum to commemorate the coin's history, said assistant curator Raewyn Passmore.

New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden and others have also dropped the penny.

Naomi Oni, 20, was on her way home from work when an unknown attacker dressed in a niqab threw a chemical substance at her leaving the retail assistant with severe burns on her head, neck, arms, legs and body.
