India announces new state Telangana, protests erupt.

(Telegraph.co.uk) - Protests erupted in southeast India on Wednesday a day after the national ruling coalition approved the creation of a new state, leading to hundreds of arrests, police and reports said.

India's Congress party approved a resolution on Tuesday for the state of Telangana to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh state, despite fears the decision could spark violence in the region which includes the IT hub Hyderabad.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leaders bowed to long-standing demands for Telangana, noting campaigns for a separate state date back to 1956.

The move must still be approved by parliament but the state's creation has the backing of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had earlier accused the government of "dilly-dallying" on the issue.

The new state, India's 29th, would be created out of an impoverished, drought-prone mainly tribal belt that supporters say has been neglected by successive Andhra Pradesh governments.

North Carolina: $10 million offered to victims of forced sterilization

(Wall Street Journal) North Carolina will spend $10 million to compensate men and women who were sterilized in the state’s eugenics programme, which was among the most extensive and long-running of its kind.

North Carolina sterilized 7,600 people from 1929 to 1974 who were deemed socially or mentally unfit. Victims were as young as 10 years old and nearly all were sterilized forcibly or with inadequate consent, according to the state.

The Legislature this past week approved a $10 million compensation fund that would begin paying out in June 2015. So far the state has identified 177 living victims.

Mexico clashes between police & armed drug gang leave 22 dead

(Telegraph) - Heavily armed men clashed with federal police in six towns in Mexico's Michoacan state, leaving 22 people dead in the bloodletting, the Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday.

"So far, we have two federal police killed, 20 presumed criminals shot dead and another 15 people under arrest," the ministry's National Security Council said in a statement.

(Reuters) - At least 45 people were killed and 70 injured when a train derailed on the outskirts of the northern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday in one of Europe's worst rail disasters.

Bodies covered in blankets lay next to the overturned carriages as smoke billowed from the wreckage. Firemen clambered over the twisted metal trying to get survivors out of the windows.

The government said it was working on the hypothesis the derailment was an accident - though the scene will stir memories of 2004's Madrid train bombing, carried out by Islamists, that killed 191 people.

Texas: Woman dies while riding Six Flags Roller coaster

ARLINGTON, Texas — A woman died Friday in an accident while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park.

The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the coaster but did not specify how she died.

Witnesses told local media outlets that the woman fell from the ride, which is billed as the tallest steel-hybrid roller coaster in the world.
